Do you Olive the Oil?
Taking his cues from small children who refuse to eat their vegetables, Mr. Mochi has been thumbing his nose at the excellent, high quality organic food I've been trying to give him for the last few weeks. Tougher to break than the most highly-trained CIA operative, even days of starvation wouldn't induce him to eat the healthy stuff. On a tip from a vet tech friend, I tried adding a teeny bit of olive oil to his food, and voila! Success!
Although I confess to using the olive oil trick more often than my friend suggested, I've seen no ill-effects, poo-related or otherwise. Has anyone else tried this? Heard of anything adverse happening after giving dogs olive oil on a regular basis?

Everlasting Treat Ball: The saga continues...
So, I decided to give the ETB another try yesterday, and Mr. Picky-McPicks-a-lot loved it? Does absence made the heart grow fonder? Or was it just the new livertastic flavor that delighted his senses? We'll never know, but the verdict is in...

Jumping on the Bandwagon...
The Obamas are still on the hunt for a dog, and it looks like there is a lobby starting to encourage them to adopt a greyhound. Their sweet temperment, athletic disposition and loyal temperment seem like a good match for the family. A good friend (in addition to many other folks in the blogosphere) adopted one of these guys and said it was the best dog his family had ever had.
My vote is in! Go for the Greyhound Obama-fam!

Caesar's Way?
For those of you who don't spend your lives watching Animal Planet (shame on you!), Caesar Milan is a self-titled "Dog Whisperer" who "rehabilitates dogs and trains people". His methods are all about people relating to their dogs with calm assertive behavior to create calm submissive dogs. His show is fascinating, and it seems like he makes amazing progress with very unruly and/or agressive dogs. I wonder if anyone out there has experience using any of Caesar's methods or thoughts on his non-traditional style?

Product Review: Buster Cube!
In the endless quest to keep Mr. Mochi happy during the day while I'm slaving away at work, I ordered the Buster Cube, and both Mochi and I couldn't be happier. I had to take a couple of minutes to show Mochi how it works, but he caught on super fast. Snuffing, snorting and crunching quickly ensued as he pushed it around with his cute little nose and paws to make his food fall out. Best of all for us human-types, it's fiendishly easy to use. Simply fill the little hole with your dog's regular food (or hard treats) shake it around a few times, and away you go! Excellent find- highly recommended!

Kong Recipe of the Day
Courtsey of the Kong Company, today's recipe is Banana Rama. Just mash together the following:
-one banana
-yogurt
-sprinkle of wheat germ
You'll want to vary the amounts depending on what size kongs you use. Freeze for at least four hours, then give to your furry friend to enjoy!

Kong Me!
For those of you unfamiliar with Kong, listen up! These babies will change your life, especially if (like me) you have to leave your critter alone for large chunks of time. Kongs are hard rubber toys with a hollow center. They come in many shapes and sizes, but the Classic Kong above is most common. Stuff treats and food inside, and your pup will be busy for hours chewing and licking every last drop of delicious goodness out. Kongs are a great way to ease separation anxiety, reward quiet behavior, and prevent boredom (and other not so-pleasant behaviors like furniture chewing, digging, and barking) when you're not around. At about $10 per Kong, they're a bit spendy, but totally worth it!

Update: Everlasting Treat Ball
After a few more attempts to get Mr. Mochi interested in chewing on the ETB, it looks as though the ball as it's marketed doesn't quite tickle his chewing fancy. However, once I took the treats out, he did enjoy a good chew AND we had some great games of fetch with the empty ball (the squishy rubber exterior makes for unpredictable bouncability and the mini-size is just right for his little jaws).
I'll be making more attempts in the future to get him intersted in the whole schabang, as well as trying to find some appropriately crumbly treats to put in the center for fetch.
For now, we rate the ETB as three barks out of five.

Petfinder.com!
For those of you looking to add a four-legged friend to your pack, and are interested in rescuing a homeless dog or cat but maybe aren't ready to visit your local shelter, I'd highly reccommend petfinder.com. Petfinder compiles all available pet-friends from both shelters and small rescue groups in your area, and allows you to search through the listings by breed, sex or age. Petfinder brought Mochi and I together and I couldn't be happier with the experience. Even if you're not sure that you're ready to adopt, take a look and see what fuzzy friends are available...you might just change your mind!
